For their Spring 2012 collection, designers Nicholas Kunz and Christopher Kunz drew inspiration from the evasive beauty of aerial landscapes and natural transparencies. Images taken from beyond the troposphere blur the natural into abstract shapes and paths.
Transparent Landscapes combines a sense of natural movement with Nicholas K’s ever present interest in functionality, such as detachable scarves and two-in-one Men’s jackets, leaving a certain level of interpretation up to the wearer.
Layered, draped silhouettes are dominant, incorporating both texture and treatments to create fabrics which embody the celestial movement of jellyfish and the subtle transparency of the sea itself. A range of textiles make up Transparent Landscapes including linen, cotton voile, gauze, and various silks.
These, as well as sheer cotton shirting and drop knit sweaters, create breathable comfort and ease. Shimmering leather appears wet, creating an illusion the likes of transparent landscapes, both are not what they appear to be.
The rich vibrancy found at the depths of the ocean and along earthy green hills led to a color palette with a sense of serenity. By incorporating a range of dark and monochromatic tones which transition to muted natural tones of algae, azure, bleached coral, sea foam, barnacle, and off-whites create a unique sensory experience.
The prints are developed with hand-dyed treatments inspired by extreme abstractions of natural occurrences such as waves, flowing kelp, and water reflections.
Since launching their women’s line in Fall of 2003, with men’s shortly after in 2006, Nicholas Kunz and her brother and business partner, Christopher Kunz, have continued to deliver a downtown city edge to their customer base. Known for their dedication to quality and utilitarian details with modern edge, the brand continues to deliver unique garments, which are current yet timeless.
